An alright game with flawed design

This is a cool idea with some obvious nostalgic value, perhaps.

This is a simple game with some addictive aspects. However, I think the mouse drag gameplay is a bit annoying and boring. The core mechanic relies on a mouse that acts well/perfectly, which is not true. So even when you are doing really well, you could lose because of a freak skip.

Also, the random nature of the game (perhaps the things, i.e. fish and eggs, are programed ahead of time and it's memorization only) is not conducive to long playthroughs.

All-in-all, this game isn't bad, but in the end it's bland gameply covered by iconic tunes. I think you'd be better suited copying Elite Beat Agents or similar style gameplay where hit detection and memorization is the key. The 'dodge' mechanic is kind of cool, but I don't believe well executed.

Keep at it!

Kinda addicting

But confusing trying to focus on two balls.. may have been better with one.

Not bad... at least better than I expected.

WalkingTreeGames responds:

Well the whole point is that it's challenging to have to control 2 at once, thanks for the review though! :D

It's a cool concept.

Kind of a bland platformer though. I love the constantly leveling up portion of this game, that requires some experimentation.

The music is forgettable, however, but not bad.

That graphics and animations are smooth, and no one can fault you for that.
It seems play-tested and quality controlled, which I (the viewer) appreciate very much.

The execution is good, but again, the game as is is average. Nothing to detract from what you did well, but jem collecting gets old after 10 minutes. If it was converted to a more metroid style of gameplay, I think the concept would have flourished better. This meaning: some action, so platforming that needs certain items (or ingenuity), and at least some story worth caring about.

I don't need an epic, something goofy and stupid will suffice... but this story/motivation was... ho-hum.

All in all, an awesome effort with some directional flaws as opposed to design flaws (in my opinion). Great work and congratulations on the views and score.

[Note: My 7 of 10 indicates a good game, but not a great game. 5 for me is average, or indifference, whereas a 6 may be likened to a B-. A 7 is a B... enjoyable... but not exceptional in any way]

Don't touch 'Play'

Cool game bro.

Love Mario Rpg... but this was like good in Newgrounds.. 1999

It's definitely a neat concept

And well executed. I'd like it if I knew you were against this pseudo-french philosophy.

Well, kinda cool choose your own story.

Why on earth you chose the Greek "work/ account(or word, speech, story, etc), I can't tell.

I'll rate you high for some originality.. it just hurts my eyes and there's not much here.

Realistically as in..?

Though I can always appreciate an attempt at 'games as art' or anything along those lines, and it's great to see some homage given to the great system that was Gameboy, your construction as 'the first game ever to realistically incorporate free will' is so off it's almost stupid.

Now if the title is a play on words the description is just a bad joke.

Now, perhaps there's something to be said of consequences for actions, or reviewing the past.
But then again, all games incorporate 'free will' because the human is agent.

also
-making a mistake (death) is expounded by the fact we repeat our mistakes?
-really, a 'replay' function is nothing new

On the other hand, the aesthetics are classic Gameboy, and the music is catchy enough to get you through the short game.

some props for a clever design, but negative points for it being too easy and not really doing what it says it does. ESPECIALLY when you bracket it as 'the concept of free will,' which is preposterous.

Great creativity, but fell short.

Interesting idea, original take. The voice acting lacked emotion, and wasn't consistent.

Kagome should have at least tried to sound more hysterical when she 'cried', as well as most other voices which didn't quite capture the confusion or hysteria, etc.

The voices could be heard, but lack of emotions really hurt this.
I thought French has some funny comments on some stuff, an dthe canadian book was neat, however, it was kind of choppy, and you couldn't use the inventory.
Some dialog seemed overstressed, and overall, the story didn't intrigue too too much.

however, keep working on the concept. it's like Pheonix Wright, and Carmen San Diego, but your own original piece as well.

work on dialog, work with your VAs more, and keep working iwth this concept. it's a welcome change, and it was neat to look at and explore. now improve all those graphics and make the next one shine!
(make your own backgrounds too, it's better that way)
keep it up!

As the voice of this thing

To respond to the previous review, I did the into as such because I thought that sarcastic would be a nice touch. In any case, the game in itself looked better in the beta, I guess animation and graphic quality was a framerate problem. unfortunately, the cons outdo the pros of this game. However, it's not all bad, but it's really a 'meh' game. plus I didn't see (yet) any credits for me.
oh well.

but I thought it was neat someone though my 'crappy' voice was funny at least. Oh well, you'll just have to keep trying.

keep at it.

meh.

high style gets you nowhere in my book.

and reading through your responses to reviews, don't take this petty praise so highly. This is a subject done time and time again. the tweens look great, and the images, however stolen/borrowed/whatever (the b/p thing was sloppy), were just uninspired.

A little bit of text about insignificant things like the BBS and secrets and most of the things weren't much of a tutorial at all, rather like a 'take an idiot by the hand and walk'.

This is a nice idea, and a good intention, but just a poor presentation with a real lack of effort, although it does show some, hence the '4'.

However, the content is easily found in the LITERATURE section of NG in the FAQ, and it doesn't matter if it's in one movie, because the real FAQ is much more precise.

Your text is hard to read, the music is overused ParagonX9, and you didn't even bother to have it so that when one music is selected, the other can't be. yay for professionalism!

this wasn't good, and it doesn't hold up to par with many of the other NG tutorial/walkthroughs.

do something better with your presentational skills.

I must say...

The wait was worth it.

beating up a few of those... "Foamy' type people was quite fun, and the whole game's style is consistant and fun.

Happy-go-lucky music, some killer 29 hit combos I pulled, and some great sounds.

Neat cinematics, great interactivity, there is no real wrong with this game. It looks great, plays great, and well, I must say I had a lot of fun with the whole thing.

Great work, amazing in-depth play, regardless of lack of a concrete plot.

I've been coming to Newgrounds since about 1997, when the best score was 3.63 (fun fact). Things sure have changed since then. I used to animate...but I probably won't anymore. I revisit sporadically. I left my crap up here as a way to look at the past.
